The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
